Abstract
Microsatellites are highly polymorphic DNA markers with discrete loci and co dominant alleles. They have a wide range of applications which previously were difficult to address experimentally. Microsatellites are almost uniformly distributed over the entire genome, which is what makes them so useful for genome mapping projects (1,2). Their high variability has made them a marker of choice in behavioural ecology, as they allow the determination of paternity and kinship (3,4). Finally, they are becoming increasingly important in studying the structure of natural populations. This chapter provides information on how to get started with microsatellite cloning and analysis, and provides some back ground information on the interpretation and analysis of the data.Keywords
