Abstract
Magnetic systems in which the ions have singlet ground states and triplet excited states have interesting properties which have been discussed by a number of authors in the past. It is shown, by representing each ion by two fictitious spins with S=1/2, that the Hamiltonian for such systems is equivalent to that of a two sublattice ferrimagnet. For special values of the parameters the effective Hamiltonian also describes a spin one‐half Heisenberg ferromagnet with hyperfine interactions or a spin‐one Heisenberg ferromagnet. Keywords
