Abstract
The previously published AMA Abbreviated Injury Scale1provides what most motor vehicle collision investigators need for minimum scientific injury evaluation—an accurate, uniform, and acceptable means for such evaluation. However, a small group of investigators who met in Detroit in 1968 to discuss means of improving injury scaling techniques, as well as a larger group sponsored by the American Medical Association in 1969, realized that scientific investigation teams require a more comprehensive and sophisticated scale. Therefore, a new system of rating the severity of tissue damage was planned which would include the Abbreviated Injury Scale, a Comprehensive Injury Scale, and a CrossReferenced Comprehensive Index.
