Abstract
Democratic socialization is viewed from a cognitive developmental perspective, in which hypothetico-deductive thinking and exposure to democratic models are seen as necessary, but not sufficient to development of democratic values. The cognitive abstracting of democratic principles is thought to be dependent on more flexible inductive thinking for a humanistic resolution to social conflict. Consequently, the constructing of democratic principles by an individual is inextricably associated with his valuing them. From this perspective, a taxonomy of democratic development is offered. Relevant literature is surveyed to indicate correlates between socio-moral-cognitive development and democratic socialization. A need for curricular emphasis in education to foster democratic behaviors is suggested. Keywords
