Techniques for Producing School Timetables on a Computer and their Application to other Scheduling Problems

Abstract
This paper describes a method by which a timetable for a medium-sized school can be produced on a general-purpose digital computer in about 1½ hours. The techniques used and time taken by human beings and the computer program are compared. The use of this work in other scheduling problems is briefly described.
