Abstract
1. Study of the seedling anatomy of Ephedra foliata reveals a connection between the vasculature of the root and that of the cotyledons. The two traces in each cotyledon are related to one pole of the root. 2. Ephedra foliata shows some variation in the number of leaves at a node and, consequently, in the number of vascular bundles in the axis. In an axis with two leaves at a node there are six, eight, or nine bundles; in an axis with three leaves at a node there are twelve bundles; and in an axis with four leaves at a node there are sixteen or twenty bundles. 3. Nodes are unilacunar with two traces to each leaf, as reported for other species of Ephedra. The leaf traces have a vertical extent of two internodes. 4. The primary vascular system is interpreted as being two systems, an outer and an inner, that replace each other in alternating internodes.
