Abstract
Nuclear medicine is defined as “the application of nuclear physics to medical investigation”, therapy and radiobiology being thus excluded. A brief summary of the development of the subject is succeeded by suggestions concerning the probable future role of nuclear medicine in an integrated medical scientific service. It is thought that this is its proper place rather than as an independent medical speciality. Instrumentation is not specifically considered but allusion is made to the likely contribution of further research into radiopharmaceuticals and of the need to exploit the established importance of cyclotron-produced nuclides by the provision of isotope production cyclotrons in major nuclear medicine centres. Keywords
