Abstract
This article examines the invocation delivered by Bishop William R. Cannon at the Carter inauguration. The author argues that Cannon's invocation departs from the rhetorical forms which have come to characterize inaugural prayers. This departure from the antecedent forms is viewed as a possible indicator of an ongoing symbolic realignment. Such a realignment would have serious implications for both religious and political persuaders.
