Abstract
An Instrument designed for the measurement of beer haze in bottle is based on the principle of estimating, by means of barrier-layer photoelectric cells, the intensity of the scattered light in comparison with the transmitted light from a bright lamp shining through the beer. The method is both sensitive and extremely rapid in operation, and since it involves no visual comparison of light intensities it is free from that source of subjective error as well as from the associated eye-strain. The diameter and colour of the bottle and the colour of the beer influence the readings obtained, but only to a minor extent; these factors can, if desired, readily be allowed for by a preliminary calibration. Random irregularities in the bottles constitute the largest source of error in the readings, but this error can be reduced to tolerable proportions by various simple procedures. Keywords
