Reactions of tetrasulphur tetranitride with halides. Part IV. The formation of cyclopentathiazenium salts in thionyl chloride

Abstract
Tetrasulphur tetranitride reacts with thionyl chloride in the presence of ferric or aluminium chloride to give a mixture of the tetrachlorometallates (MCl4 , M = Fe or Al) of the cations S3N2Cl+, S4N3 +, and the new species S5N5 +; their i.r. spectra are discussed. These three cations appear to be members of a potentially large class of inorganic aromatic SN species.
