Abstract
We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a linear chain of elastically coupled spins with an antiferromagnetic interaction between them in the XY model and the adiabatic approximation. This system exhibits a second order phase transition and a magnetic susceptibility which vanishes at absolute zero. The effects of magnetostriction are considered and shown to affect neither the order of the transition nor the qualitative behavior of the magnetic susceptibility. Keywords
