Abstract
Laboratory data on visible and near-infrared emission from hydrogenated amorphous carbon are correlated with observational data on extended red emission and near-infrared continua in astronomical objects. It appears that the observation of extended red emission is indicative of the presence of newly formed carbon dust that is rich in diamond-like material. The relationship between this material and normal interstellar dust is discussed.
