Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to review our investigation into devices which automatically acquire spoken language. The principles and mechanisms underlying this research are described and then experimental evaluations for several tasks are reported, involving both spoken and keyboard input. The generic mechanism in these experiments is an information-theoretic connectionist network embedded in a feedback control system. Keywords
