Field Tests of Traps and Lures for the Apple Maggot

Abstract
The effectiveness of various combinations of 5 traps and 15 baits in attracting Rhagoletis pomonella (Walsh) was compared in a field test. A yellow gypsy moth trap baited with a 5% soy hydrolysate and 50% ammonium acetate solution caught significantly more flies than other traps baited with this solution. This trap, which contained no adhesive, was simple to clean and maintain and caught few other insects. A sticky artificial apple internally baited with 50% ammonium acetate solution was the next most effective combination. The most attractive bait in Sectar® traps was a 5% yeast hydrolysate and 50% ammonium acetate solution. Most of the attractiveness of bait mixtures containing hydrolysates and ammonium acetate apparently were due to the ammonia compound because hydrolysates alone were ineffective.
