Abstract
A-Al2O3:C Tl detectors were first produced in the form of single crystals. They demonstrated high sensitivity to photon radiation (60 times higher than LiF:Mg,Ti), low background (0.1 µGy) and the absence of appreciable fading during two years of storage in the dark. Light sensitivity of the detectors and TSEE from single crystals and powders for measuring weakly penetrating radiation are discussed. To solve the problems of skin dosimetry, radiation dose mapping, dosimetry of radon and tritium, TL dating and accident measurements, highly sensitive a-Al2O3:C powders of various grain sizes were developed. The possibility of controlling the TL and TSEE sensitivity of the superficial layers of single crystals and powder grains by changing the concentration of oxygen vacancies in these layers is described. Keywords
