Abstract
By considering simple examples from the viewpoint of both classical electromagnetism and the special theory of relativity, it is shown that the magnetic forces between moving charges are of order v 2/c 2 times the electric forces between the charges, where v is the velocity of the charges. The relevance of electric forces in the definition of the ampere is discussed. Keywords
