Abstract
An analytical solution is presented for the temperature distribution along the shear plane in orthogonal cutting. The principal assumption made is that the heat transferred by conduction in the direction of motion of the workpiece or chip may be neglected. The nature of the error involved in this assumption is investigated. The over-all fraction of shear-plane heat transferred into the workpiece is also computed and compared with previous results.Keywords
