Abstract
This article presents facts about, speculations on, and possible ways of determining the actual intracellular ionic environment of halophilic microorganisms and those that live in other extreme conditions. It suggests that halophilic archaebacteria have a truly salty internal environment (though one in which water and salts might well have limited freedom), whereas halophilic and salt-tolerant eubacteria may have salty external environments but much less salty internal ones. Keywords
