Abstract
A regional classification of the climates of Southern Africa is given as an introduction to the study of the physical climatology of the country. The eight regional divisions and the descriptions of their Climates are intended first to distinguish those features of the South African climate which are likely to be of most interest to physical meteorologists and, Secondly, to draw attention to the climatic factors which are important in respect of living conditions. For this purpose climatic diagrams are presented which show, for places typical of each region, mean rainfall, range of mean temperature, averages of monthly extremes of temperature. And range of relative humidity. A new theory of the Berg wind iS offered and explanations are suggested to account for diurnal variation of the wind on the plateau and the mechanism of the summer rains. Keywords
