To the Editor: Several days after the Armenian earthquake, an announcement was made at a reception for the American Society of Nephrology, requesting assistance in providing dialysis to the survivors of the earthquake. The attempt to comply with this request revealed an aspect of the medical care community that is rarely given media coverage.The relief effort was undertaken by an ad hoc organization of people who did not know one another and who had no experience in providing medical services for international disaster relief.
