The Effects of Estrogen and Progesterone on the Arterial System of the Uterus of the Cow

Abstract
The endometrial arterioles of 13 to 16 mo. old heifers are essentially straight, while similar arterioles in the uteri of mature cows are more numerous and more highly coiled. This may be of some significance considering the more frequent occurrence of metestrous bleeding in heifers. Estrogenic hormones are more effective than progesterone in maintaining the endometrial arterioles which normally disappear following ovariectomy. The study of the uterine arteries was accomplished by injecting red vinylacetate into the middle uterine artery. After hardening the tissue was digested away by immersion in a 2% HC1 soln. with added pepsin.
