Abstract
This paper reviews the major regulations relating to environment and safety, and analyses recent environmental litigation cases which have implications for project planning. An analysis of the significance of recent changes in environmental regulations is presented. Based on these, lessons for institutionalising the implementation of environmental regulations by way of regulatory reforms, environment impact assessment procedures, introducing compensation norms and building capability in the field of environmental management, are derived. One of the major prerequisites for the successful implementation of environmental policy is to use a complementary set of economic regulatory and legal instruments. Keywords
