THE NATURAL OCCURRENCE OF HISTOPLASMA CAPSULATUM IN A CAVE

Abstract
Shacklette, Martha H. and H. F. Hasenclever, (Laboratory of Microbiology, NIH, Bethesda, Md. 20014). The natural occurrence of Histoplasma capsulatum in a cave. 3. Effect of flooding. Amer. J. Epid., 1968, 88: 210–214.—The effect of annual flooding on the presence of Histoplasma capsulatum in a cave was studied. For approximately 3 months after the water had receded, the fungus could not be isolated. For the subsequent 3–4 months, H. capsulatum could be isolated from air and soil samples and sentinel animals. While the water was filling the cave, the organism could be isolated from water samples. The isolation of H. capsulatum from groups of bats captured at different times within the caves varied.
