USE OF TRICHLOROETHYLENE IN CONTINUOUS SCOURING AND BLEACHING OF TEXTILES

Abstract
Previous work on solvent-extraction systems for scouring textiles is breifly reviewed. Details of an improved continuous system, based on trichloroethylene, are given including a description of the pilot plant employed in the investigation. A commercial plant now in operation is also described. The trichloroethylene treatment, followed by continuous desizing with sodium peroxide, has been applied to a variety of cotton piece-goods as a preparation for dyeing. Various modifications to obtain a full bleach on cotton have been investigated and, also, the advantages of solvent dewaxing of cotton before conventional bleaching have been assessed. In Part II it is shown that the new continuous solvent-extraction technique can be applied with advantage for scouring several other fibres such as rayon, linen, wool, jute and glass and that, in general, such processes can be carried out continuously in a convenient, safe and economic manner. In addition to cotton, the solvent-extraction method appears of particular promise for scouring wool piece-goods and glass fibre fabrics.Keywords
