Maintenance and Generalization of Object Naming Training in Anomia Associated with Degenerative Dementia

Abstract
Anomia (anomic aphasia) is a common disorder in progressive dementia. A training technique, spaced-retrieval, was used to retrain patients to name common objects. In addition, generalization and maintenance of training were tested. The training enabled the patients to effectively name target objects. Training appeared to generalize from line drawings to actual exemplars of objects. In addition, effects of training were maintained across several weeks. Results indicate that spaced-retrieval may hold great promise as a method to retrain the ability to name objects, and that effects of such training can be readily maintained with little effort by caregivers.
