Abstract
The Mössbauer spectra of 57Fe nuclei in NiX, PdX and PtX alloys where X is a transition or noble metal have been analysed to determine the electric field gradients and isomer shift changes for X neighbours. The effects can be accounted for on the basis of Friedel's model for screening of the X impurities in nickel alloys, and by size effects. The behaviour of the 57Fe spectra across a series of platinum nickel alloys can be explained on the basis of size effects. Keywords
