Abstract
By means of the method of Hamilton and Schwartz, an increased concn. of parathyroid hormone was found in the blood of patients who had a long-standing deficiency in kidney function. This is in accord with the findings of previous investigators who noted at autopsy an enlargement of the parathyroids of patients who had grossly impaired kidneys. The proposed mechanism is that the phosphate retention of renal insufficiency tends to depress the serum Ca which provides a stimulus to hyperfunction and enlargement of the parathyroid glands. This may be a defense against tetany. Keywords
