Abstract
The right ventricles of four dogs were exposed to 20,000 R Co60 irradiation. The animals were carried through complete stages of: (a) control studies for several weeks, (b) irradiation, and (c) postirradiation studies until death from typical heart failure 23-33 days later. Several different types of cardiac function curves were measured at intervals during the control and postirradiation periods. No evident deterioration of the ventricles could be discerned from the function curves during the first 14 days following irradiation. However, during the ensuing 9-19 days the ventricles deteriorated rapidly, as evidenced by deteriorating ventricular function curves, terminating in death. Ventricular function, as estimated by the method used In the present study, declined to an average of 43% below that of normal ventricles prior to death of the animal. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
