Abstract
The Knoxville series, the latest West Coast Jurassic, is best developed and best preserved and exposed in its type area on the west border of the Sacramento Valley, in Tehama County. It consists of deltaic deposits that form 3 major stratigraphic groups, each characterized lithologically and stocked with appropriate faunas of marine invertebrates, which occupy a chronological span from early-middle Port-landian to latest Tithonian time. The Knoxville series contrasts strongly in faunistic features and geologic history with the next older, the Franciscan and Mariposa groups. The descriptions of spp. include: 1 echinoderm; 2 brachiopods; Pelecypoda with the n. spp.: Inoceramus scotti*, /. stantoni*, Pecten (Chlamys) risti*, Pteria (Oxytoma) californica*, Aucella knoxvillensis*, A. elderensis*, A. attenuata*, A. occidentalis*; Gastropoda: Itieria californica*, Eucyclom-phalus cupidoformis; Cephalopoda: Phylloceras timothyi*, P. glennense*, P. capellense*, Lytoceras huberti*, Aulocos-phinctes reedi*, A. jenkinsi*, A. taffi*, A. diabloensis*, A. ? colusaensis*, Kossmatia tehamaensis*, K. kleinsorgensis*, Substeueroceras stantoni*, Oppelia (Streblites) quintoensis*, Haploceras pachecoense*, Protacanthodiscus crossi*, Bochi-anites glennensis*, Cylindroteuthis occidentalis*, C. knoxvillensis*, C. glennensis*, C. newvillensis*, C. klamathonae*, C. porrectiformis*, C. clavicula*, Acroteuthis? watsonensis*, Belemnopsis californicus*, B. tomsensis*, B.? napaensis*, B. mercurialis*, B.? berryessae*, B. cachensis*, B. spicu-loides*, Hibolites wilburensis*, H. arroyoensis*, and H. toroensis*, all upper Jurassic fossils from Calif. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
