Abstract
Synopsis: Sedimentary features of a marine Silurian sequence in south-west Scotland indicate transport and deposition by turbidity currents. Directional sedimentary structures at the base and top of graded greywackes show respectively that early erosive phases of the currents travelled from the north-east, whereas later depositional phases came from the north-west. Structures discussed in relation to their possible origin include sand volcanoes and current crescents. The effects of widespread carbonate replacement and local hematite enrichment are described. There is little evidence in the greywackes for a diagenetic matrix, which is concluded to be largely detrital in origin. Keywords
