Abstract
For the procedure used in the Kodak Research Laboratories, it is shown that rms (root-mean-square) granularity is proportional to the rms value of microdensitometer output voltage. The proportionality constant depends only on the phototube circuit of the scanning instrument and is independent of optical conditions. It is also shown that rms granularity as measured in the scanner is specular and that the measured value depends on the aperture of the optical system in the scanner. Granularity is found to increase linearly with the ratio q between the effective density of the sample in the instrument and singly diffuse density. Methods of obtaining granularity values on a diffuse basis are outlined.
