Abstract
Oxygen evolution (and coupled ATP-formation) in a Hill- reaction with ferricyanide is diminished after pre-illumination of the broken chloroplasts in an atmosphere of nitrogen, but not in the presence of small amounts of oxygen. Since cyclic photo-phosphorylation is not impaired by pre-illumination, only the second light reaction of complete photosynthesis (the photo-oxidation of water) is involved in this inactivation. The light inactivation of a Hill - reaction system is also prevented by o-phenanthrolin.
