Changes in the Hydrogen Ion Concentration of Healing Fractures

Abstract
A study of pH changes in fracture hematomas with dogs was made. The hematomas were aspirated at 48 hr. intervals for 7-15 days and pH detns. made with micro glass electrode. It was found that within 30 hrs. the fluid was less alkaline than venous blood, with a low reading of 6.9. Gradually the fluid became more alkaline, with a high reading of 7.6 in 9 days. Calcification could be demonstrated in most fractures when the fluid became alkaline.
