Abstract
As one of the most frequently performed motor acts, walking has been studied from numerous approaches. In this paper, these methods of studying gait have been classified within four groups: observation, holistic, segmental, and comprehensive. Key contributions from a historical perspective, recent developments in the study of gait, and selected results from formal studies are presented for each category. Observation is a useful clinical tool and methods used in the laboratory have revealed selected characteristics of normal and abnormal walking and, to a limited extent, have provided information on the effectiveness of treatment for gait disorders. Methods which offer objective data have not been translated to widespread clinical use, but the need for this transition remains paramount if the health practitioner is to know whether various forms of treatment are beneficial to patients who walk in some abnormal fashion. Keywords
