Abstract
Two weather situations, one in June 1946 and another in March 1949, suggest that cyclonic circulations may originate in the high tropical troposphere (above 30,000 ft and between 15°N and 10°N) and remain stationary as long as two weeks while extending downward to 20,000 ft or less. They may then move out of the tropics into higher latitudes where they appear on 500‐mb or lower contour maps as “cold lows” similar to those described by Palmén.
