Abstract
SummaryAn index of peripheral arterial resistance (P.R.I.) was measured in two groups of subjects by analysis of the carotidogram and measurement of blood pressure. In the first group of 20 non-hypertensive subjects with no evidence of vascular disease, measurements were taken before and after an infusion of phenylephrine. There was a highly significant (p < 0.001) increase in the P.R.I, from 9.88 to 16.39. In the second group of hypertensive patients, the same measurements were made before and after treatment for 2 months with 2.5 mg indapamide per day. Treatment resulted in a highly significant (p < 0.001) decrease in the P.R.I, from 14.96 initially to 10.99. The reproducibility of the method and the significance of the results obtained in the two groups studied indicate the value of the method for assessing a patient's vascular status and evaluating the pharmacodynamic activity of an antihypertensive agent. Keywords
