Microscopical Examination of the Stool for Steatorrhea

Abstract
THE microscopical examination of random stools for the presence of increased amounts of fat has proved to be a valuable screening procedure in the detection of malabsorptive syndromes in this laboratory. Although questioning the accuracy and reproducibility of such estimates of fat by microscopy, Weijers and van de Kamer1 gave data that indicate the clinical usefulness of this procedure, which in their hands showed an error of only 11 to 14 per cent.
