Varieties of Mexican Typhus Strains

Abstract
It seems to be a general belief that typhus fever in Mexico is essentially of the murine type. From Oct. 1936 to Jan. 1938 the authors isolated 20 strains from typhus patients. Two of these strains showed the characteristics of murine typhus, 10 were non-orchitic, showed numerous brain lesions, were lost after 2 transfers in mice and had minor immunological differences from orchitic strains; the other 8 strains were lost because of inapparent infections but showed scrotal reactions after one or more transfers in guinea-pigs. Typical murine typhus is evidently not as frequent in Mexico City as suspected. European-like typhus is rather frequent but this is not considered as imported typhus, an hypothesis sustained by the fact that many strains behave like intermediates between murine and European strains.
