Abstract
X-ray diffraction evidence indicates that the symmetry of graphite can be no higher than twofold. Evidence consists of twin observations and the occurrence of satellite reflections, both of which are incompatible with sixfold symmetry. Both phenomena strongly suggest that the classical concept of equivalent carbon-carbon bonds must be discarded in favor of one involving unequal bond lengths and bond angles. Keywords
