Observations on A Season's Growth in Parmelia Caperata and P. Sulcata in South Devon

Abstract
The growth of single lobes of P. caperata and P. sulcata was followed photographically between May 1974 and June 1975. The main growing period in both species was from late summer to early winter, with peak between Aug. and October. Growth in both species was correlated with total rainfall, but in P. caperata other factors must have operated to produce relatively rapid growth in autumn and slow growth in late winter and spring. Total growth was 6.98 mm over 13 mo. in P. caperata and 4.34 mm over 11 mo. in P. sulcata. Maximum growth rates recorded were 0.09 mm/day (29 Aug.-10 Sept.) in P. caperata and 0.04 mm/day (10-18 Oct.) in P. sulcata. In P. caperata most growth took place within 5 mm and about 40% within 1 mm of the lobe tip. In P. sulcata most growth occurred within 2 mm and some 70% within 1 mm of the tip.
