Abstract
A review of adaptive image transform coding techniques is given. Adaptive techniques are superior to nonadaptive procedures; however, their implementation requires a significant degree of added complexity. A major aspect of adaptive transform coding is the understanding and utilization of the local statistical structure of the image. Rate adaptive communication and buffer feedback are also important aspects of adaptive coding procedures. The discussion emphasizes the image quality aspect of the coding process. Keywords
