Abstract
The forcing of convection due to time-dependent heating is calculated in terms of an inhomogeneous boundary condition on the complex envelope function at the sidewalls of the container. Conditions for eliminating the forcing are derived. Application is made to recent experiments on the timescale for the onset of convection. Keywords
