Abstract
The total loss, scattering loss and absorption loss coefficients of graded-index compound glass fibres are discussed as mode-dependent effects. The optical power is propagated in an optical core of mode-dependent width which is composed of core and cladding material with different absorption and scattering coefficients. The ratio between the power propagated in these two regions is mode-dependent. Some experimental results are given which illustrate the effect. Some experimental aspects are indicated. The graded-index compound glass fibre is compared to the graded-index silica glass fibre which shows mode-dependent losses due to the graded loss coefficients and to the central dip. Keywords
