INFLUENCE OF AGE ON KETOSIS

Abstract
The fasting ketosis of [male] albino rats as measured by the level of acetone bodies in the blood increases less rapidly the older the rat. After 48 hrs. of fasting it has reached a similar maximum for all ages. This is probably related to the liver glycogen stores which tend to decrease less rapidly in old than in young rats. At all ages liver glycogeu reaches a minimum after 24 hrs. without food and then tends to increase for the next 3 days.
