Abstract
The wave equation is solved for the ensemble average of particle displacements produced by an explosion. The explosion is assumed to occur in a finite cavity in an infinite heterogeneous medium. The solution is applied to the seismic waves generated by an underground nuclear detonation. Field observations from the underground nuclear test program at the Nevada Test Site are in qualitative agreement with the theory. Keywords
