Direct Capture of Slow Neutrons by the Nuclear p States

Abstract
Cross sections for the capture of a slow neutron by unfilled bound p states are calculated with the p-state wave functions and slow neutron wave functions for a square well and a Woods-Saxon type potential in the case of Ca40. The results are in good agreement with experiment. This allows us to suggest the possibility of obtaining minimum possible neutron cross sections for nuclei with given A. Also, neutron cross sections may give a sensitive test of nuclear potentials.
