Abstract
Samples of skin-surface lipids of acne patients and healthy controls were analyzed for total and free fatty acids. With increasing severity of the acne, the ratio of free fatty acids to total fatty acids decreased significantly in the males (p < 0.025) and increased significantly in the females (p < 0.025). The discrepancy in these results is discussed. It is concluded, that only in the females indications for an enhanced lipolysis in the follicles of acne patients can be found.
