Abstract
The stability with respect to small perturbations of a piecewise linear velocity profile of the half-jet (or shear layer) type in a layer with an unstable entropy gradient has been studied. The maximum instabilities are found to be either in the plane of the velocity profile or perpendicular to it depending on a critical Richardson number which is quite insensitive to the depth of the layer. Keywords
