Abstract
The Zakharov-Shabat theory of integrable systems with more than one spatial dimension breaks down when certain resonances between solitons occur. Remarkably, the resonance condition is precisely the same as that for the strong interaction of three weakly coupled linear dispersive waves. This provides a mechanism for the creation of new particles by collision. Keywords
