Wandering behaviors of confused elderly people pose considerable management problems for institutional caregivers. Described is a specific comprehensive program that was implemented in an intermediate care facility/skilled nursing facility that resulted in a decrease in problematic wandering, an increase in patient freedom and safety, and an increase in staff skill and comfort in handling wandering behaviors. Described are the program components, problem identification, preventative programs and activities, appropriate interaction and intervention, and staff mobilization. Keywords
